PARKING LOT SAFETY TIPS

Dear Grant Parent Drivers,

We need your help. Each of you has the responsibility of driving your child(ren) to school each morning. While our situations is vastly improved, there are still too many times when the safety of children has been in jeopardy. We are asking each of you to read the following parking lot safety tips and help us to ensure that the morning pickup time is safe and orderly. Please follow these vital safety rules. Thank you for your cooperation.

PARKING LOT ETIQUETTE EXPLANATION

Drop off or pick up your child at the passenger unloading zone only.

Many parents who are caught in line droping off their child in the middle of the parking lot forcing the youngster to negotiate through cars to the entrance gate.

Follow the flow of traffic. Sometimes cars make illegal U-turns to avoid completing the traffic circle.

When your child has exited your car, please proceed out of the parking lot. While we think it’s great that you want to watch your child walk all the way to the playground, remember that anywhere from 5-20 cars are waiting their turn to drop off their passengers.

Pay attention to what is going on all around you. We have observed on numerous occasions drivers on their cell phones while dropping off their children.  With children and sometimes parents walking through the parking lot, this is a very dangerous situation and not paying attention may cause a serious accident.

Treat other drivers as you would like to be be treated.  Be courteous!

Last time we checked, every driver is an adult.  Yet we have been witness to drivers yelling at each other, honking their horns, and even threatening one another, sometimes using vulgarity.  Is this the example we want to set for our children?

Try to arrive by 8:20 a.m. School begins at 8:24 a.m.!  While we understand how hard it is to get it together in the morning, try to make the effort of leaving your house earlier.  We will record tardies for those arriving after 8:24 a.m.

If you are worried about your child entering the school, try parking on the street and walking your child to class. You cannot believe how much easier it is to find a place on the street (25th Street is open until 10 a.m. and walk with your child to the school yard.

Do not park in the designated staff parking spaces

Actually, most parents have been very good about honoring staff parking spaces.  We have over 90 employees at Grant and only 32 parking spaces.  Please respect the designated spots.

Do not park illegally

Nothing can cause a traffic jam or a dangerous situation easier than an inconsiderate driver who blocks a passing lane, parks in front of the fire lane, or parks in a handicapped space.  We don’t want to ticket parents who park illegally, but we will have your car cited or in extreme cases towed away.
